A transparent background, when you need one
A PDF page has no background of its own. Readers paint it white, and that is how most converters hand it back. When the PDF holds a logo, a signature or a diagram that is going on top of something else, that white box is the part you then have to remove by hand.
Tick keep it transparent and the page is drawn onto nothing at all: only the marks on the page are opaque. It works when the artwork in the PDF is vector or text, which is how logos and diagrams are usually exported. A scanned page is a photograph of white paper, and its white stays white.
Which resolution to choose

PNG is lossless, so a page of text stays razor sharp at any of these settings, and a text-only page is often smaller as PNG than as JPG. Scans and photographs are the exception: as PNG they come out several times larger than the same page as a JPG, with no visible gain.
What ends up in the image
Everything a PDF reader would show: text, vector drawings, images, form fields and stamps. It is a picture of the page, so the text can no longer be selected or searched and links stop working. Each page becomes its own file, numbered with leading zeros so they sort in order.
Questions
Why did my PNG still come out with a white background?
Either the box was not ticked, or the white is part of the page itself. A scan, or a PDF that draws a white rectangle behind its content, carries that white as real content, and making it transparent would mean erasing part of the page.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The pages are drawn by pdf.js, served from this site and run inside your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.
Can I convert only some pages?
Yes. Type 2, 1-4 or 1, 3, 8- in the pages box, or
leave it blank for the whole document.
Why are my PNG files so large?
The pages are scans or photographs. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which suits text and line art and is wasteful for photos. Use the PDF to JPG converter for those.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
No. A PDF that asks for a password cannot be opened here. Remove the protection in a PDF reader you trust first.
