    What you actually gain

    At matched visual quality, WebP files run about 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG. On a page carrying a dozen photographs that is often the difference between a site that feels instant and one that does not — and unlike most performance work, it requires no change to your code, only to your files.

    WebP is supported by every browser released in the last several years, on desktop and mobile. It is no longer a format you need a fallback for in ordinary use.

    Converting a whole folder

    Drop in as many files as you like. Because the work happens on your own processor there is no queue, no per-file charge and no cap — the practical limit is your device's memory, which on a normal laptop means hundreds of photographs at once. Download them individually or take the whole batch as a single ZIP.

    For website images it is usually worth resizing at the same time. A photograph displayed in a 1200-pixel-wide column gains nothing from being 4000 pixels across; setting a maximum width here does both jobs in one pass.

    Converting an existing JPG re-encodes it, so it is lossy twice over. In practice this is invisible at quality 80 and above. If you still have the original files from the camera, converting those directly gives a slightly cleaner result than converting JPGs that were already compressed once.

    Questions

    + Is WebP supported everywhere?

    In browsers, yes — every current desktop and mobile browser displays it. Outside browsers, support is patchier: some older desktop software and printing services still refuse it.

    + How much smaller will my files be?

    Typically 25–35% at comparable visual quality. Photographs with lots of fine detail gain less; flatter images gain more.

    + Does WebP support transparency?

    Yes, unlike JPEG. Converting a transparent PNG to WebP keeps the transparency and still saves space.

    + Will converting twice hurt quality?

    Slightly, in principle, because the JPEG was already lossy. At quality 80 and above it is not visible. Converting from the original camera files avoids the issue entirely.

    + Is anything uploaded?

    No. Everything runs in your browser, which is also why there is no batch limit.
