The new ssc.gov.in portal photographs you through its own camera and no longer takes an uploaded photo. The signature is still a file, and it is the one that gets rejected.

SSC stopped accepting an uploaded photograph
The Commission's current website takes the candidate photograph live, inside the application module, using your webcam or your phone camera. There is no photo upload step to prepare for. This is the single most common thing the resizer pages get wrong: most of the first page of results for "SSC photo size" still sells a tool for a file the portal will not ask you for.
What the live capture wants is a plain background, the camera at eye level, your face straight to the lens, and no cap, no mask and no glasses. If it rejects you, the fix is lighting and framing, not a file size. Nothing on this page will help with it, and we would rather say that than sell you a resize.
Your signature is a different matter. It is still scanned or photographed, still uploaded as a JPG, and still has to land inside a band.
Two signature boxes are in circulation
SSC states the signature box in centimetres, not pixels, and the figure is not the same in every notification. Both of these are being published for 2026:

Both buttons are above, so you do not have to decide before you start. The weight band is the same either way, and the pixel figure follows from the centimetres at roughly 100 pixels per centimetre. Read the annexure of your own notification before you submit: it is the only document that settles this, and it is a page and a half long.
Ten to twenty kilobytes is a band, not a ceiling
A clean signature is dark strokes on white paper, which is the cheapest thing JPEG has to encode. Scan one at a sensible resolution and it comes out at four or five kilobytes, under the floor, and the portal rejects it. The error message says the file is invalid and names no number, which is why this catches so many people.
Every other resizer treats 20 KB as a ceiling and hands you the smallest file it can produce, which walks you straight into the floor. Both boxes below are filled in here. The page searches for the best quality that stays under 20 KB, and if the result lands under 10 KB it spends the headroom it has left climbing back into the band. When the floor genuinely cannot be reached, because the scan holds too little detail to fill ten kilobytes at that pixel size, the row says so instead of padding the file with junk. Rescan in colour, or at a higher resolution, and bring it back.

+ Do I still need to upload a photo for SSC?
Not on the current portal. The application module photographs you live through your webcam or phone camera. Only the signature, and later your documents, are files you supply. If a notification you are reading says otherwise, follow the notification.
+ Which signature size should I use, 140 × 60 or 236 × 79?
Whichever your own notification states in centimetres. Most say 4.0 × 2.0 cm, which is 140 × 60. Several 2026 guides quote 6.0 × 2.0 cm for CGL, which is 236 × 79. Both buttons are on this page, so trying the other one costs you a click.
+ My signature file is too small and the form will not take it. What now?
That is the floor, not the ceiling. Raise the pixel width, or rescan at a higher resolution or in colour, then run it again. A signature that arrives at 4 KB usually clears 10 KB once it is a few hundred pixels wider.
+ Does it have to be JPG?
Yes. SSC takes JPG and JPEG for the signature. This page outputs JPEG and gives you no format dropdown, because a choice that can only be wrong is not worth offering.
+ Is my signature uploaded to your server?
No. The resizing and the size search both run in your browser, on your own processor. Nothing is sent anywhere. The page keeps working with your connection switched off after it has loaded, which is the simplest way to see that for yourself.
